San Cristóbal offers a distinctive addition to a land-based Galápagos journey. Above all, it is the island to choose for visitors who want to spend time among large numbers of Galápagos sea lions and observe their behaviour at close range.
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is remarkable because sea lions are not confined to a particular visitor site. They occupy beaches, harbour areas and stretches of waterfront right in the centre of town. Their constant presence and activity make San Cristóbal one of the finest places in the Galápagos for observing sea lions.

Why stay on San Cristóbal?
San Cristóbal adds valuable variety to an itinerary, particularly when visitors have more than five or six days in the islands. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno has its own airport, several worthwhile places can be reached without a boat, and marine excursions provide access to some of the island’s finest wildlife experiences.
The sheer number of sea lions is a major reason to stay here. Visitors can observe animals resting, swimming, calling, nursing their young and interacting with one another around the coast and within the town itself. Few other inhabited places in the Galápagos offer such continuous opportunities to watch their natural behaviour.
The island also works particularly well for travellers interested in natural history, coastal walking, snorkelling and a quieter pace. The best balance depends on the time available, sea conditions and whether visitors wish to include a full-day boat excursion.

What should you prioritise?
For most visitors, Kicker Rock is the principal full-day excursion from San Cristóbal. The Interpretation Centre and Tijeretas and La Lobería provide the best complementary activities close to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Time should also be allowed simply to explore the town and waterfront. Watching the large sea lion colony and the extraordinary range of behaviour taking place around the harbour and beaches is one of San Cristóbal’s defining experiences.
The highlands are a reasonable additional option during a longer stay, particularly for travellers who prefer not to take another boat excursion or who have not seen giant tortoises elsewhere.
How long should you stay?
Two or three nights allow time for one principal marine excursion, exploration close to town and opportunities to observe the sea lions around Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. A longer stay creates more flexibility for weather and sea conditions and allows visitors to include the highlands or spend more time walking and snorkelling independently.
