Puerto Baquerizo Moreno
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of the Galápagos Province and the principal base for exploring San Cristóbal. It combines an active waterfront town with beaches, coastal wildlife and several excellent visitor sites within easy reach.
A town shared with sea lions
Sea lions are one of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno’s defining features. They rest on beaches, rocks, jetties and occasionally pavements throughout the waterfront. Their presence makes the town feel inseparable from the surrounding natural environment.
These are wild animals and should always be given sufficient space. Visitors should never touch, feed or obstruct them, even when they appear completely relaxed around people.
The waterfront
The broad waterfront promenade is the centre of town life. It provides views across the harbour and connects restaurants, cafés, shops, beaches and the passenger pier.
Sea lions are the most conspicuous wildlife along the waterfront, but marine iguanas, pelicans, frigatebirds and other coastal birds can also be observed. Sea turtles are sometimes visible in the water, particularly around quieter coastal areas.
The waterfront is enjoyable during the day and again in the evening, when local families gather and the restaurants become busier. It feels like a lived-in Ecuadorian island town rather than simply a tourist resort.
Beaches and snorkelling within walking distance
Several beaches and coastal sites can be reached on foot from the centre of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Playa de Oro, Playa Mann and Punta Carola provide opportunities to relax, enjoy the coast and observe sea lions close to town.
Tijeretas is one of the best nearby places for snorkelling and can also be reached on foot, following the route past the Interpretation Centre. La Lobería is another particularly rewarding snorkelling site, although it involves a longer walk or a short taxi journey followed by the coastal path.
Wildlife encounters and water conditions vary. Visitors should be cautious around sea lions in the water, particularly large territorial males, and maintain the required distance from animals resting ashore.
A practical island base
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno has San Cristóbal’s airport, accommodation, restaurants, shops and local transport. It provides access to the Interpretation Centre and Tijeretas, La Lobería, Kicker Rock and longer marine excursions.
The town works particularly well for visitors who want to combine organised excursions with time to walk, snorkel or explore independently. Its compact scale makes it easy to enjoy without filling every part of the day with a formal tour.
How it fits into a journey
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno can be used for a short stay, but two or three nights allow time for both a major marine excursion and the nearby coastal visitor sites.
It gives a land-based itinerary a noticeably different character from Puerto Ayora or Puerto Villamil: smaller than Puerto Ayora, more active than Puerto Villamil and especially memorable for the extraordinary number of sea lions living throughout the waterfront.
