La Lobería, Floreana
La Lobería is a coastal visitor site reached on foot from Puerto Velasco Ibarra. The walk crosses Floreana’s dry lowlands before arriving at a rocky shoreline used by sea lions, marine iguanas and coastal birds.
When sea conditions are favourable, the site also provides opportunities for independent snorkelling with sea turtles, sea lions and fish.

The walk from Puerto Velasco Ibarra
La Lobería is reached on foot from Puerto Velasco Ibarra along an exposed trail through dry coastal vegetation. Finches, mockingbirds, other land birds and lava lizards may be seen along the way. With little shade and uneven volcanic ground, the walk can feel more demanding than its distance suggests, so visitors should carry water and allow enough time to return before dark.
The coastline
The trail reaches a rocky coastline with small areas of sand and sections of relatively protected water. The name La Lobería refers to the sea lions that use the site.
Sea lions may be seen resting ashore, moving between the rocks or swimming close to the coast. Marine iguanas can be difficult to notice against the dark lava, while coastal birds use the shoreline and surrounding vegetation.
The site is quiet and largely undeveloped. Its appeal lies as much in the walk and the sense of isolation as in any individual wildlife encounter.
Snorkelling
When conditions are suitable, visitors may snorkel from the shore and encounter sea turtles, sea lions and coastal fish. Marine iguanas may sometimes be observed feeding underwater.
However, the tide, swell, currents and visibility vary, and entry over the rocky shoreline can be awkward. Visitors should assess the water carefully before entering. Anyone who is uncertain of their swimming ability should remain ashore or visit with someone familiar with the site.
Other wildlife
Shorebirds, pelicans, frigatebirds and other coastal species may also be encountered, while rays are sometimes seen in the water. Wildlife varies from day to day, and no particular sighting should be regarded as guaranteed.
Independent or guided visit
La Lobería can normally be visited independently and is one of the most accessible natural sites for travellers staying in Puerto Velasco Ibarra.
A guide is not essential, but can add value by identifying wildlife, explaining the relationship between the dry coastal vegetation and marine environment, and helping visitors assess the route and water conditions.
Combining the visit
La Lobería combines naturally with time in Puerto Velasco Ibarra and at Black Beach. It can also be visited before or after a separate excursion to the Floreana highlands.
Visitors should avoid fitting the walk too tightly around an inter-island boat connection, as heat, wildlife encounters and sea conditions may all affect the time required.
What to bring
There are no facilities at the site. Visitors intending to snorkel should bring their own equipment; a waterproof bag may also be useful.
