Floreana

Floreana offers a very different experience from the larger inhabited islands. Its tiny community, quiet shoreline and strong sense of history make it one of the best places to understand how isolated life in the Galápagos once felt.

Why stay on Floreana?

Puerto Velasco Ibarra is small, rustic and peaceful, with very limited shops and services. For some visitors that simplicity is precisely the attraction. Dark nights, quiet beaches and the absence of a busy town give Floreana a character that is increasingly difficult to find elsewhere in the islands.

Floreana is also famous for its human history, including early settlers, mysterious disappearances and stories connected with pirates and whalers. These are not simply background details: they help explain the atmosphere and identity of the island today.

Planning a stay

Transport and accommodation are much more limited than on Santa Cruz, Isabela or San Cristóbal, so a visit needs careful planning. Connections are improving, but schedules and availability may determine whether Floreana works best as a day visit or an overnight stay.

Post Office Bay, Punta Cormorant and other remote visitor sites are normally associated with cruise itineraries or specially arranged excursions. They are treated separately from the places explored while staying in Puerto Velasco Ibarra.
