Highland Peak Tour
Tour description
During the ride into the highlands in our private vehicle, you’ll hear about the change in vegetation zones and observe how the arid flora transitions into the humid, cloud forest. An understanding of the climate and currents will explain this phenomenon!
Lava-tubes, sink holes and parasitic cones will provide the props for a class on the local geology and volcanoes of the archipelago.
Santa Cruz is home to some three thousand giant tortoises, the biggest in the islands and we will get close looks at them, often in abundance.
We’ll learn about their physiology, migration patterns and status.
While walking through one of the best surviving stands of Scalesia forest, an endemic, evolving ecosystem, you’ll understand the vulnerability and future of such a sensitive ecosystem as well as appreciate the various, less frequented Darwin finches including the elusive woodpecker finch.
