El Garrapatero Beach
El Garrapatero is a quiet, largely undeveloped beach on the eastern side of Santa Cruz. Its sandy shoreline, dry-zone vegetation, mangroves and nearby lagoon make it more than simply a place to swim.
Beach, lagoon and wildlife
A short trail through the dry forest leads from the parking area to the beach. Finches, mockingbirds and lava lizards may be seen along the way.
The generally sheltered water is suitable for swimming, and kayaks may sometimes be available. Marine iguanas, sea lions, crabs and coastal birds can also be encountered.
Behind the beach is a shallow brackish lagoon. Flamingos are sometimes present, depending on rainfall and water levels, together with pintails, stilts, herons and other waterbirds.
Planning the visit
El Garrapatero is normally reached by arranged taxi from Puerto Ayora, with a collection time agreed in advance. Visitors should bring drinking water, food or snacks, sun protection and swimming equipment.
It works particularly well as a relaxed half-day excursion for travellers who value space, scenery and time at the coast away from the island’s busier visitor sites.
