Los Túneles
Los Túneles is one of Isabela’s most distinctive marine excursions, combining unusual volcanic formations, a short walk across the lava and snorkelling in sheltered channels and pools.
A volcanic marine landscape
Lava flowing towards the sea formed a network of arches, tunnels and platforms. Some sections later collapsed, leaving a maze of clear, shallow waterways surrounded by dark lava.
Visitors normally leave the boat to walk carefully across part of the formation. Blue-footed boobies and other coastal birds may be seen resting or nesting among the lava.
Snorkelling and wildlife
A separate snorkelling stop explores the channels and sheltered water around the formations. Green sea turtles, rays, white-tipped reef sharks, seahorses and numerous fish may be encountered. Penguins and other marine wildlife are also sometimes seen, although sightings vary and cannot be guaranteed.
The combination of geology, clear water and varied marine life makes Los Túneles one of Isabela’s strongest snorkelling excursions.
The boat journey
Los Túneles is visited on an organised guided boat excursion from Puerto Villamil, normally in a small group. The journey crosses open water, and entering the site through the surf requires an experienced local boat captain.
Sea conditions can affect comfort and occasionally prevent the excursion from operating. Travellers who are particularly susceptible to motion sickness should take this into account, even though much of the activity within Los Túneles takes place in comparatively sheltered water.
