La Lobería – San Cristóbal
La Lobería is one of the best places near Puerto Baquerizo Moreno for independent snorkelling and close observation of sea lions. Its sheltered coastal water, rocky reefs and sandy beach create opportunities to see sea turtles, marine iguanas, fish and sea lions without taking a boat excursion.
The beach and coastline
La Lobería takes its name from the sea lions that use the beach and surrounding coastline. Sea lions may be resting on the sand, moving through the shallows or swimming around the rocky reef.
The combination of sand, lava rocks and coastal vegetation creates a distinctly natural setting despite its proximity to town. Marine iguanas can often be difficult to notice against the dark rocks, while shorebirds and Darwin’s finches may be observed around the beach and trail.

Snorkelling
La Lobería is one of San Cristóbal’s most rewarding shore-access snorkelling locations. Depending on conditions, visitors may encounter sea turtles, sea lions, marine iguanas feeding underwater and a variety of reef fish.
Although the water can appear protected, the entrance may be rocky and the tide, swell and currents can alter the experience considerably. Visibility also changes from day to day.
Sea lions sometimes approach swimmers out of curiosity. Visitors should remain calm, avoid pursuing or touching them and allow the animals to control the encounter. Particular care should be taken around large territorial males and females with young pups.
Walking beyond the beach
A trail continues beyond La Lobería towards the cliffs. This extends the visit into a longer coastal walk and can provide views across the ocean as well as opportunities to observe marine iguanas and seabirds.
The terrain becomes rougher than the approach to the beach, with uneven volcanic rocks and little shade. Suitable footwear, sun protection and sufficient water are important. Visitors should also remain well away from exposed cliff edges.
Reaching La Lobería
La Lobería lies approximately 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) from the centre of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It can be reached on foot, although the walk is exposed to the sun, or by bicycle or taxi.
A taxi can leave visitors close to the beginning of the final approach, from where a short walk leads to the beach. Anyone travelling by taxi may wish to arrange a collection time, particularly later in the afternoon.
Independent or guided visit
La Lobería can be visited independently and is an excellent option for travellers looking for a relatively inexpensive wildlife and snorkelling experience.
A guide is not essential, but can add considerable value by explaining the coastal ecosystem, identifying wildlife and helping visitors assess the conditions. La Lobería can also form part of a privately guided day together with the Interpretation Centre and Tijeretas.
Conditions and responsible visiting
Visitors should maintain the required distance from wildlife and never block the movement of sea lions between the beach and the water. Belongings should not be placed close to resting animals.
There are limited facilities at the site. Visitors intending to snorkel should bring their own equipment unless it has been arranged in advance.
