El Puntudo and Santa Cruz Highland Walking
El Puntudo reveals one of the least familiar environments on Santa Cruz: the cool, misty upper highlands beyond the agricultural zone. Walking here provides an opportunity to explore the island’s Miconia and fern-sedge vegetation, search for highland birds and experience a much wilder landscape than the better-known coastal visitor sites.
Media Luna and El Puntudo
The route begins above Bellavista and climbs through the humid highlands towards Media Luna. From here, trails continue towards El Puntudo and Cerro Crocker, the highest area of Santa Cruz.
El Puntudo is the shorter objective, while the route towards Cerro Crocker makes a longer and more demanding walk. On a clear day, the upper slopes can provide extensive views across Santa Cruz, Puerto Ayora, the surrounding ocean and neighbouring islands. Low cloud and mist, however, are characteristic of this habitat and can obscure the views completely.
A distinctive highland ecosystem
The upper highlands contain vegetation not encountered around Puerto Ayora or the island’s arid coast. Miconia, ferns, sedges, mosses and other moisture-loving plants create a landscape that can feel surprisingly remote and atmospheric.
This is also an important area for birdlife. Galápagos rails may sometimes be encountered along the trail, together with warbler finches and other highland land birds. Galápagos petrels nest underground in this part of Santa Cruz, although they normally spend the daylight hours feeding at sea and are not generally seen during the walk.
Visitors must remain on the established trails, both to avoid becoming lost and to protect the petrels’ nesting burrows and the fragile highland vegetation.
Walking conditions
The trail can be wet, muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Mist can arrive quickly, visibility may be limited and some junctions are not obvious. Good walking footwear, rain protection, drinking water and sufficient time are essential.
For the longer routes, it is important to walk with a guide who knows the trails and can select an appropriate route according to the weather, ground conditions and the abilities of the group.
